SC Tax Rebates for 2022

By: Jonathan Godwin

In June, SC lawmakers approved up to $1 Billion in tax rebates for eligible taxpayers who file a return in SC by 10.17.2022. The rebates are supposed to be issued before the end of the year.

Here is what their website outlines for eligibility.

  • You are eligible if you file a return by the extension deadline of 10.17.2022; you have a tax liability for 2021; and you are an SC resident, part-year resident, or nonresident. This means you don’t have to live here to qualify…you just have to incur a tax liability in the state.

  • Tax liability is defined as total SC tax minus any SC tax credits for which you may have qualified at the time of filing.

The minimum rebate cap is set (right now) at $700 per return filed, based on how the SCDOR website has described it. They go on to say that married couples who filed a joint return will receive one rebate.

There is important information on their website regarding how to change your address if you have moved since you filed your 2021 tax return with SC, and also how to update your bank account info if that has changed. They will direct deposit your refund into the account you provided with your 2021 SC return, so it’s important to update your info with them if anything has changed. You must do this by Nov 1, 2022.

Here is the link for more info. We strongly advise you to review it before Nov 1, 2022. https://dor.sc.gov/rebate-2022
